NovaShunt’s core technology is a battery
powered implantable pump that can be recharged through the skin and catheters
designed for efficient and safe collection and transport of fluids within the
body. For the management of chronic abdominal fluid accumulation in patients
with late-stage liver disease, congestive heart failure and certain cancers,
the pump system moves fluid from the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity into the
bladder, where it is eliminated through normal urination.
Designed and manufactured in Switzerland,
the pump system is safe, robust and reliable. Triggered by pressure sensors
that monitor fluid within the body, the system moves fluid throughout the day
according to physician set-parameters.
The pump system is fully implantable,
allowing the patient a full range of activity and mobility. The system is
placed during a 30 minute procedure under local or general anesthesia.
Adjustments to the pumping parameters are done noninvasively in the outpatient
setting. The patient recharges the pump at home as needed.
Potential applications of this technology
include the management of ascites, pleural effusions and other conditions where
fluid overload causes clinical complications.
Life
is good again

“For a
long time now I have been feeling much better. I have not had any paracentesis
procedures for more than 1 year and need much less, sometimes even no
diuretics. Life has changed – I’m feeling good and I’m working on a new book
with a friend of mine. My next goal is to see the Mount Everest – this has been
a dream for a long time.”

System in March 2009
The NovaShunt Pump System is an investigational device, limited to
research use and is not available for sale.
